Have I reached the point I have to make the dreaded update have gone through your post and would like to helpġ.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and featuresĤ.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printersĥ.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. I am loathe to update to Windows 10, since I have never, ever heard one good thing about it and i am afraid that a number of my more specialized programs won't work on it. I'm beginning to wonder whether the problem is that an automatic update was no longer compatible with the woefully outdated Windows 7. If anyone has an idea, I am all ears (usually, I'm all thumbs).

This seems to me to be the classic Catch 22: I can't start the print spooler without updating the drivers, and I can't update the drivers without starting the print spooler. So, I uninstalled the printer altogether and tried updating the drivers again, with the same result. I Googled a bit more and then tried to update the drivers, but they would not update because the print spooler was not running. The print spooler, however, could not be restarted.

After a bit of Googling, I went to Services/Run as Administrator/Print Spooler/Properties and set the startup type as Automatic under the General tab and selected Restart the Service under the Recovery tab, and finally clicked Start the Service in the left-hand column of the Services list. I ran the computer's troubleshooter, and it gave the message "The print spooler isn't running." The troubleshooter could not fix the problem. My computer suddenly could not find the above printer today. I ran the computer's troubleshooter, and it gave the message 'The print spooler isn't running.' The troubleshooter could not fix the problem.

I have also tried to install the drivers manually but there are no C4700 photosmart printers under Hewlett Packard or HP when you go that route in Windows. The first time I tried to install the software it actually hung up at this point and I used task manager to close it down. I see nothing in task manager leading me to believe it has just shut itself down. The software initially starts and at the point where it checks for updates it just disappears. I have a windows 7 64-bit OS and I'm trying to install the printer software.
